Wedding March 2.0

Those who know me, know that I go back and forth on tradition. It's important that we know where we come from, where we are, and where we want to go. I respect tradition and I uphold it when it still fits. Other times, I advocate for us to maintain the spirit of the tradition but to evaluate how it fits in the reality for the time we live.

It's the summer time, prime wedding season. While I'm not getting married any time soon, I do think about it some when a family member or friend is, or when I see something provocative (good or bad sense) about it. I've even decided a few minor details about what I might like when that time comes:

  • Bouquet: Tulips of all colors, not a whole bunch of white flowers
  • Last name: Keeping mine unless his is even shorter :)
  • Music: No classic Wedding March tune and no Electric Slide at the reception

I know that some people from a religious Christian perspective have a long tradition of not dancing. I am observant myself and I can appreciate that view, but I don't always share it.

There really is a time to dance, people. If you look at ancient and modern cultures, including the biblical ones, you'll know that dancing is used for celebrations. And what's more of a celebration - spiritually and life-wise - than a wedding?

I love the couple in the YouTube post below for not choosing the traditional wedding march and for dancing their way into marriage, allowing their friends and family to celebrate from the start of the ceremony. (It reminds me of the high school graduation entrances that some schools here in Philly do...celebrate the end of the old and the beginning of the new!)

Maybe the song isn't to your taste. But I hope theirs is a long-lasting union that breaks the rules and keeps them as happy as they were here...at the beginning of forever.
