Simply Amazing

Sometimes an unbelievable opportunity comes your way. Other times, it just seems like one.

I've spent the second half of this week at the Religion Communication Congress 2010 in Chicago. This interfaith event happens once every ten years, and provides an invaluable learning and networking space for religion communicators. Working for a church benefits administrator, I may not be the typical audience for it, but I've learned so much and had other concepts I already knew supported and positively reinforced here.

The opening plenary featured Rev. Dr. Otis Moss, III, from Trinity UCC in Chicago and his sermon (my term) was bang on. I truly wish it was available on YouTube or some other video format...his talk was that awesome and timely.

Each afternoon, we attend three workshops. Most of the ones I've chosen have been about using social media in religious communication and outreach. My favorite on so far is one I attended today on anti-racism communication - more to come on this in a separate post.

Truly, I am still processing all that I've heard, seen, shared, and received. I am enjoying making connections with people in similar roles, or even completely dissimilar ones, from different religious or ecumenical groups, institutions, and agencies.

And while my event planning background makes it easy for me to understand why this congress is only held once a decade, the pragmatist in me wonders if the changes aren't coming so fast now that a shorter term may be needed. Until then, I'm going to see if there's a regional chapter near me and join.

Well, and begin planning to attend the 2020 congress!
